About our Chinese classes

Mandarin asks two things at once: a tonal system that changes meaning, and a character set that has no alphabet to fall back on. Rushing either one is why most self-taught learners stall. We teach tones from the first session and introduce characters at a pace that actually sticks.

Coursework follows the HSK ladder from HSK 1 to HSK 3, the standard recognised by Chinese universities and employers. Classes are online, 1:1 or small-batch.

We encourage flexible learning, providing 1:1 sessions and small batches that fits your schedule.

Chinese classes — common questions

Which Chinese levels do you teach?
HSK 1, HSK 2 and HSK 3.
Do I need to learn characters, or is pinyin enough?
Pinyin gets you speaking; characters get you reading. We teach both together, because learners who postpone characters usually have to restart later.
Are the tones as hard as people say?
They are unfamiliar rather than hard, and they are much easier to learn correctly from the start than to fix after a year of ignoring them.
Can I start Chinese with no background at all?
No prior knowledge is needed. Complete beginners start at the first level and we place returning learners after a short conversation, so you begin where you actually are rather than where a syllabus assumes you are.
